A recent survey was conducted showing that Android leads the pack in available free apps. With a whopping 57% of the apps being free in relation to the amount paid apps available. Apple on the other hand, has only 25% of their overall Apple offerings that are free.

Free apps are one good reason for a new smart phone user to look closer at Android rather than some of the other platforms available. The Palm OS comes in a close second with 32% of their apps being available for free. Windows and Blackberry are neck and neck with 22% and 24% respectively.

Most people do not mind paying for an app that is worth it to them if it is something they are going to use on a constant basis. Developers put quite a bit a work into each app that they create and deserve something for their effort. For many the option of free apps allows them to try something that they may otherwise not look at due to cost.

Many of the paid apps available have a cut down, free version that is available for the user to try on a temporary basis to make the decision whether to purchase the full version or not. In this respect, android apps operate in much the same way as beta software for the computer. The trial versions are normally only missing one or two key features and give the user a very good feel for how the app will operate on the phone.

This is yet another reason why smart phone users everywhere are trending more towards the Android OS and less towards some of the old standbys. This was reflected in another study that showed Android gaining a significant market share in the race to catch up to Apple. So for those who like free easy-to-use apps for their phone, the logical choice is Android.
