Google Earth available on Android – sorta

Posted on 28 February 2010 by admin

It seems Google Earth is available on Android, which has been a long time coming to say the least (It's been on the iPhone for a year or so, interestingly enough). There's a catch? We're afraid so. For now anyway, it only works on the Nexus One smartphone (which happens to be Google's phone), which has quite a limited audience last time we checked. Yes, there's whispers it'll be out for the Droid soon, but in the meantime...here's the lowdown on why its only available for one platform right now.

Google Earth

For now, Google Earth will only work on phones with Android version 2.1, which just happens to limit it to the Nexus One, coincidentally.

The better news is that once all those other phones get upgraded to Android 2.1, it'll work with Google Earth, the bad news being who knows when that will actually happen.

The app itself looks pretty solid, allowing to search all of the Earth and play God with all of the land and streets of the globe, more or less, and it even comes with some very cool (based on early tester input) voice navigation features. We're hoping that various manufacturers get their act together and upgrade to Andy 2.1, even if to allow their users to experience this slick app for themselves.

The app is expected to be free when released.
