Google, never one to do anything half-way, launched their Nexus One just in time to steal the thunder of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. While the phone itself was not featured at the show, it is easy to understand why it was still the buzz of Las Vegas. The latest effort to unseat the iPhone as the top dog in the smartphone niche should create a little more panic for ATT and Apple.

While reviews are mixed on the phone, it seems like there are more iPhone loyalists writing the reviews than actual users. Every little aspect of the phone is being put under the microscope instead of appreciating the phone for what it is: a great option to the iPhone. Let’s face facts, the iPhone has plenty of downfalls and it is hardly perfect.
The one aspect of the Droid that people keep hammering to death is that there are not as many applications as the iPhone has. Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but while the iPhone has well over 100,000 apps, about 70% of them are duplicates. Now that number is a total guess, but having been through the app store and having seen at least five or six different versions of almost every application, this is actually a very conservative number.
The curious thing here will be to see how long it stands behind the iPhone as its premier smartphone. While they have an incredible Blackberry selection, that seems to be an entirely different niche of user. With the Google release and the Droid taking a lot of the attention away from the iPhone, it will probably only be a matter of time before we start seeing Droid phones getting released with ATT service plans.
