We have seen numbers getting thrown all over the place and while we are not sure how much of it we can believe, it is hard to ignore the impact that the Droid is having on the smartphone market. Their marketing campaign was aggressive and very clever and it is obviously having an impact.

Now the iPhone not only has to deal with the Droid, but several other Android phones that Google is releasing. The Nexus One is the latest one and it is seemingly going over very well. Because ATT is the only carrier for the iPhone, many customers are wandering over to Verizon and other companies that use this platform to see what the rage is all about as soon as their contracts are over.
ChangeWave conducted a survey late last year with people who either had expiring contracts or that were in the market for a smartphone and found that a little over 20% were ready to check out the Android. While the iPhone was still the most popular choice at 28%, it was a fairly sharp decline in their overall market share. The clever robot commercials and maps seem to be having an effect.
The one phone that is holding its own is the Blackberry. However, it is tough to even consider them to be in competition with either the iPhone or the Droid phones. Blackberry phone users are their own little niche and seem to have no desire to get caught up in this war. They like their full keyboard and use the phone for business instead of entertainment. The Blackberry is built for this and while it is no real threat in terms of percentages to either of these phones, nor are they a threat to steal away any of the Blackberry loyalists.
The funny thing is that it appears as though there is only one real target for Droid and that is the iPhone. Every ounce of advertising that they have goes into pointing out the shortcomings of the iPhone and dismissing the myth of all of their applications. Something tells me that with these recent survey results, there is going to be a lot more bloodshed on both sides before this one is over.
