With Skype for Android, smartphone users can make free worldwide Skype-to-Skype calls using a 3G, EDGE, or GPRS mobile data connection or Wi-Fi. Android Product Manager Mark Douglas commented on the popularity of Skype in the consumer market. The new Skype for Android app means that Skype is now available on Symbian, iOS, and Android, three popular mobile operating platforms. This initial release or the Motorola Milestone means that consumers do not have to sign up to a lengthy contract deal and be tied to one network provider, instead they can use their existing SIM card whether that be currently on a contract or the pay as you go scheme.

The user simply inserts their SIM card into the Motorola Milestone handset which will transfer all 'saved to SIM' contact names and numbers as well as the current mobile number and provider. The SIM Free Motorola Milestone is unlocked to all network operators so any existing and 'live' SIM card will work.

The Milestone is the second Motorola phone to feature the Android operating system, this time however it is the newer Android 2.0 version which provides a fast user experience with 3 homescreens to place quick launch Apps. Both phones feature a 5.0 mega pixel camera with autofocus but the newer Nexus One does pack a larger processor of 1GHz over the Motorola's 550MHz which is on a par (if not a little faster) with the Apple iPhone 3Gs.

The Milestone can boast to be the slimmest Android device to feature a full slide out Qwerty keyboard, another benefit is the inclusion of the multi-direction D-Pad on the keyboard, this acts as a cursor would on a home computer or laptop and makes selecting and navigating fast and precise.

Although the Motorola Milestone has been initially released as a SIM free and unlocked mobile phone there are plans to launch the handset on the Orange network over the coming days, it is widely expected that other network launches will follow quickly with the next possibly being T-Mobile.

Alternative Android handsets that have recently been released include the Samsung Galaxy Spica, Acer Liquid and forthcoming Sony Ericsson X10 and Motorola BACKFLIP.

The Look

When looking at it for the first time, one would think that its design is nothing out of the ordinary. Much like most of the Smartphones that followed in the success of the iPhone’s design, the I7500 also sports an oversized screen that occupies almost the entire mobile’s front surface. One advantage of this device is its use of the AMOLED capacitive technology for its 3.2-inch touch screen that makes things a whole lot easier. Below the screen are the familiar basic buttons that one would need to navigate through the device with ease. Nonetheless, it is almost inevitable that the I7500 will still receive its fair share of criticism when it comes to its physical design. Aside from its very “plasticized” look, this mobile is also a magnet for fingerprints that will require users to constantly wipe the greasy surface. Some might also feel a bit disappointed with the lack of color variety in its built-in wallpapers that do not give the device enough vibrancy.

The Interface

One thing Google brought with it in the new Android interface is speed. Because the new interface is super fast, users will easily be able to swipe through the menu screen with minimal fuss. It is also obvious that this interface was specially made for touch as the Android OS’s ease of use is comparable to that of the Apple iPhone.

Among its multitude of impressive features, it is obvious that the 5-Megapixel camera stands out. It comes complete with geo-tagging and autofocus features as well as a 2592 x 1944-pixel resolution.

Final Word

The reality is that the only glaring difference between the new Samsung I7500 and the HTC Magic is the 5-Megapixel camera and the 3.5 mm ear jack – two handy features both possessed by the former. So unless Magic owners out there are particularly compelled by either of these functional advantages, there is no need to go out and get the I7500. Although the I7500 is equipped with a powerful operating system, the exact Cupcake OS can also be found in the Magic. However, those who are looking forward to the release of HTC’s latest interface (Sense UI: set to be installed in the upcoming HTC Hero) and just can’t wait any longer might want to look into the I7500 as it seems like an on par counterpart.

But the G1 is still a very good phone and the developments in the G2 are not that significant, you may also find that you will be able to get better deals on the G1, now that the HTC Magic has been released.
