I am trying to set up Yahoo mail as my mail account on the mail application on the HTC Hero, but every time I enter my information, it says that it cannot connect to the Yahoo server. What are the settings I am supposed to use? Or is there a different Yahoo mail application I can put on my phone? I don't want to have to access my e-mail through the phone's web browser.

Yahoo does not provide this type of access for their FREE email service. If you are using the PAID version Yahoo! Mail Plus, here’s the info:
Incoming mail server settings
POP server: plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL
Port: 995
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) settings
SMTP server: plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Use SSL
Port: 465
Use authentication

Make a gmail account, forward mails from yahoo to it, and set up email to pull from gmail
