iPhone 4 or Samsung Captivate? (AT&T)?

Posted on 02 August 2010 by admin

I was going to get the iPhone 4 but I was looking through AT&T's Android page and saw a new phone, the Samsung Captivate. It's a 4 inch screen (bigger than the iPhone) with the super-AMOLED display. I wanted the iPhone 4 because I was already used to the OS (I have an iPod touch third generation) and because I wouldn't have to choose between which device I would use. For example, if I got another smart phone, I might use the browser on my iPod because it's faster but YouTube on the phone because it loads faster but mail on the iPod because it's more organized, etc... What should I get? And is the Captivate going to be launched anytime soon?

I would personally go for the Samsung Captivate as its better and faster due to Android 2.2 and its amazing touch screen.

iPhone 4 is 3G phone which has a 5 mega pixel LED flash camera. The phone supports MP3, MP3 VBR, AIFF etc music players. The LCD screen is 3.5″ diagonal and model is very light in weight at only 137g. This phone from Apple supports many languages and has 32GB built in memory. Battery life is 7 hrs for 3G and 14 hrs for 2G.

Samsung Captivate has a 5 mega pixel camera along with HD recording. 16 GB on board storage and 3 D surround sound makes this phone unique. The 4 inch Super AMOLED touch screen allows improved touch sensitivity and better visibility in a bright environment.

The Samsung Captivate will be launched soon but the company has not specified any date as yet.

im getting the captivate as soon as it is released, i hear many iphone users are doing the same, they say the iphone os has become somewhat stale. they both have similar app stores as the android market is expanding very fast, android also has more free apps. the iphone has a flash which would be nice, the captivate more than likely does not but it has not been confirmed. apple is also notorious for extremely limiting what people can do to their products, which is a big turnoff for me. ive also heard that the captivate may have twice the battery life of the iphone and up to a month of standby, but that again is unconfirmed. also i dont think iphones can multitask, android can, and iphones also do not have flash so websites that use flash video will suck, android does support flash

It depends on what you want to do phone-wise, and how long you are willing to wait. Infosync World says the Captivate will be available in August; AT&T and Samsung both say “soon”. When released by AT&T, it will ship with Android 2.1, and AT&T has not committed to a 2.2 upgrade. If you drive and need hands-free, Android 2.1 doesn’t support hands-free Bluetooth calling, although 2.2 will.

Assuming you already have a phone to go along with your iPod, getting an iPhone would make both redundant. The iPhone’s processor is faster so one would expect its performance would be better than the iPod’s. Having only one device to carry and sync is most efficient (and cheaper). Although the Captivate has a larger screen, the iPhone’s has higher pixel density, and thus, is sharper. The iPhone has two cameras: a 5MP camera with flash and the forward facing VGA. The Captivate has one camera no flash, and the iPod no camera. Both phones do 720HD video. Antenna issues aside, the only thing I’d look at is the iPhone’s performance as a phone, since that is the only function you will be replacing. I know lots of iPhone users and not one of them has ever said that the “phone” part of the iPhone was as good or better than their previous phone(s). A few have admitted that they put up with lower phone performance because the iPhone does so many other things well. If voice calling is not that important I can’t see why you wouldn’t choose the iPhone.

The one big advantage to the iPhone (and you should thank Steve Jobs for this) is that iPhone users can update their firmware and software as Apple updates it. AT&T Android and WinMobile users have to hope that AT&T allows such updates to their phones or risk voiding their warranties and/or bricking their phones by updating on their own. If having the “latest and greatest” is a need, wait for the Captivate to see how good it is and weigh the big screen and phone performance against the convenience of the Apple alternative.

Pros and cons of each- as many searches on the internet will surely tell you.
I have and love the captivate (you know, except for the BROKEN GPS [google it]) my wife has the iPhone.
I prefer the screen size and ligter weight of the Captivate. I would actually recommend, though, that if you are familiar with iOS then you should probably stick with an iPhone.

You could get a Samsung Galaxy S on T-Mobile, make it do wifi and then get a next generation iPod touch and carry both.
