When is the Sprint HTC Hero going to get the Android 2.1 update? We’ve been hearing rumors since last year.?

Now it's every other week, March 26, April 9th, April 16th... come on now.
Who's fault is it, HTC, Google, Sprint.
I'm leaning toward Sprint cause Google has coded the 2.1 update, HTC has it already on the Nexus One. My guess is Sprint is just waiting for the Evo and Legend to come out this June/July/August and will leave us to try.
I know you can root it and do it yourself, but I was trying to be legit.
Thanks Michael.
I know how to root it the phone, that's not the point. I had the iphone and jailbreaked that within a day, but AT&T's network sucks and Tmobile isn't that good in my area so I went with Sprint.

I have a few guys at work that rooted their phones and mixed reviews. I just want Sprint to @%&$ or get off the pot.

Legit? lol f that….I am an motorolla droid owner and I spent not longer than 1 day rooted to be “legit”. just accept the fact if you play by sprints rules you will not be getting your update any quicker…the whole point of an android is to be open and free for all developers not just sprints inhouse team that sends you a prepacked can of crap that most phones get. why dont you take the lead and actually do some searching you could probably find a complete 2.1 setup rom or even a leaked build that would be the same thing but improve your device. I know you may not like to hear this but….trust me there are smarter programmers out there than the people spoon feeding from sprint

I have an HTC Droid Eris, which is the same phone as yours, just on Verizon. When I got it a month ago, Verizon told me that for sure there would be a 2.1 update available for it “within the next few months”. I’ve since asked Verizon for any news on this and they still are saying there will be an update, but they don’t know when. I’ve also seen on various websites that early versions of the 2.1 update have been leaked and are installable – but it seems like they’re incomplete/unstable so I’m waiting for the real thing – I don’t want to risk bricking my phone just to get the ability to run a few more apps that I can’t run now.
