Robot View is an app for the Android phone that allows one to easily create 3D views of the world. Think Google Street View creation in the palm of your hands. The app uses OpenGL, accelerometers, compass, GPS and the on board camera to automatically construct pseudo mosaic 3D panoramas. Started off as an experiment in augmented reality. by the vegan robot. Available on the android market as a time limited beta! visit botview.appspot.com for a peek at a sharing app for the rooms that robot view creates...

Cool! It’s like mobile Photosynth for Android. If only Microsoft would release their version… Naw, that’ll never happen.

Really cool idea. My images aren’t lining up well though. Is this something that would basically be best set on a tripod and rotated? Also, do angled shots affect the stitching? I just tried to do the room I’m in and the results aren’t very good.

Cool app. Was wondering if there are any plans to make the review photos transparent so it is easier to line up the next shot?

I think it would be cool if you could somehow put up a an additional “real-time” mode of input. That is, instead of sequential taking of images, you’d just feed data continually – similar to recording a video or using a hand scanner. But that’s just my pipe dream probably for now..

I’ve used it to recreate a room and it worked beautifully. Do you need testing assistance of any sort?
August 2nd, 2010 at 11:18 pm
We’re working on something like that. Hopefully soon, maybe by new years.

After creating the room view on the android phone, can you download the “room” to your computer and upload to a blog?
August 3rd, 2010 at 12:41 am
The app assumes you are standing still. To make a virtual tour, you would have to create multiple rooms, separately. We are working on a sharing feature, that will allow for uploading of rooms, and viewing them from a web browser.

The beta is free, just found out.
Question:
After you’ve made the 3d pan of your lab, if you were to walk to the next room and create another 3d pan in the same file, would it work? As in would you be able to create a virtual tour with multiple rooms?
Do you know at what point there are to many pictures and it gets lagy/buggy?

I’m getting a Droid in 2 days and waiting is painful.
Is Robot View Beta free?
It looks like once there’s some contrast blending it’ll be near perfect.
