SPRINT USERS: Is the Samsung Epic 4G an “upgrade” from the HTC Evo 4G?

Posted on 30 June 2011 by admin

If you watched my most recent videos you may have heard that I traded my Evo for an Epic. There were a few reasons why I came to the decision I did. One, Samsung's Hummingbird processor pretty much spanks the Evo's 1st gen Snapdragon. This is one of the main reasons that drew me to the device. Well, that and the awesome video/audio quality. I haven't really been a fan of HTC's picture/video/audio quality when recording and that's what I do. I document most of my life in video. For my memoirs. My first day with the Epic was bitter sweet. The Hummingbird processor made Android's UI silky smooth and menu's, 3D gallery and games all flew by at a buttery 60fps. Even scrolling through emails or web browser is smoother than that of the Evo (but still not quite iPhone smoothness). But what I soon came to realize is that the phone was bulky. The physical keyboard wasn't enough to justify the bulk of the phone in that it was completely useless to me. The flat, unstaggered keys were more difficult to type on than the virtual keyboard. I really felt like I had the G1 all over again (in terms of bulk). Another thing that surprised me was that the TouchWhiz on the Epic wasn't the same as it was on the Vibrant. Little things like the launcher was stripped of certain features and bigger things like TouchWhiz's awesome media player was curiously absent from this Sprint model of the Galaxy S. Although the phone ran fast for the first week. Almost... TOO fast. I soon found my phone slowing ...

Something is wrong with samung phones. There not good phones at all. Epic 4g reminds me of their (samsung) Moment phone. Samsung Epic phone failure.

    8. osvaldo8393 Says:

The reason is because the Evo uses wthe max touch sensor which the epic does not and works differently.

i rooted my vibrant and put a custom rom on it. i dont kno if its bc im only 13 and im impressed with a lot of things, but i am loving my phone. my best friend has the evo 4g and its pretty good, but personally i like the vibrant better bc the SA screen and the speed. the only thing i like about the evo over the vibrant is the kickstand and the HTC Sense.

please respond back bc i wanna hear what u have to say. thanks

It seems like you are running 2.2 on the Epic now. I am going to be getting a Sprint phone soon and was wondering how the Epic compared to the Evo running 2.2? Also the Evo Shift is out now and has a very similar processor to the G2 which has been able to be stably run at 1.42ghz, so in theory the Evo Shift should be able to hit similar numbers. What are your thoughts on that? Thanks

Your videos are always so relevant to what’s going on in my life. As far as phones at least. I have an Evo, but the battery life is killing me. I’ve been thinking about switching to the Epic, due to the fact that Sprint only has two Android phones worth talking about. I’m not sure if I should go out and get the Epic, or just wait until something better comes along. To be honest I’ll be pissed if I get the Epic, and something sexy as hell comes out a week later. -__- lol

    19. PhotoGuy30523 Says:

      epic ftw

    20. youngthizzl420 Says:

the epic is better in its ways and i own them both so when i get tierd of one i switch to the other but im running custom roms on both and the evo itsn’t ass good as the epic viper rom ext4 4.0.2c and the evo is on cm7

    21. Bearakuda Says:

I have no complaints on my vibrant. He is right about the rfs file system though. The rfs didn’t work out to well. That’s why samsung didn’t used it for the nexus s. But that is nothing great development can’t fix. I running ext 4 also, overclocked to 1.4, super fast and super stable. All I’m waiting for now is a stable 2.3

    22. jaraya92679 Says:

Own an epic 4g. Currently running ViperRom 4.0.2b with EXT4. 300 plus apps and this thing still flys. I’ve only seen 1 issue and that is with GPS. This issue is only on some of the Epic 4gs and not all. You can have either GPS signal drop randomly or have 2 minute stand by times while the device tries to find a signal. Everything else works perfect. I personally love the screen and keyboard, since it is my business phone the keyboard is good to type out long emails with correct punctuations.

    23. jaraya92679 Says:

WOW I will never take EmoGamer’s reviews seriously because he stated there are few developers working on improving the epic 4g. I’m assuming EmoGamer has not taken a look at xda-developers dot comYou will find plenty of experienced devs making roms and custom kernels that drastically improve Epic 4g performance. Also at xda you will find plenty of roms that change the epic 4g from RFS to EXT4 file system and is very stable. I really hope EmoGamer does more research next time.

    24. jaraya92679 Says:

      wtf

    25. dransby Says:

Well, I have a Samsung Captivate and I fucking luv it!!! Flashing is simple after some research and now have froyo 2.2.1 via Phoenix 3.0 rom. XDA is a great site, and a must for android users… So if you are a noob to your phone, check it out, and most importantly, read!!! Don’t flood the devs with dumb ass questions answered on the first page. And donate cuz I did, my phone is now officially shitting on the iphone!
